7 Questions to Ask a Mechanic Before Approving a Car Repair
Seven practical questions to ask before approving a car repair so you can understand the diagnosis, estimate, parts, urgency, and next steps.

A repair estimate is easier to evaluate when you know what to ask. The goal is not to challenge the technician; it is to understand what is being recommended before you authorize the work.
1. What problem did you diagnose?
Ask what was tested or inspected and what evidence led to the diagnosis. A symptom and a diagnosis are not always the same thing.
2. What exactly needs to be repaired or replaced?
Ask for the specific component and the proposed work. If several items are listed, ask which belong to the same repair and which are separate recommendations.
3. How urgent is it?
Ask whether the issue affects safety, could cause additional damage, or can reasonably be monitored or scheduled later.
4. What is included in the estimate?
Separate parts, labour, diagnostic charges, shop supplies, taxes, and other fees so you understand the total rather than only the headline number.
5. What parts are being used?
Ask whether the quote uses original-equipment, aftermarket, remanufactured, or other parts and whether alternatives are available.
6. Is there a warranty on the parts and labour?
Ask what is covered, for how long, and what you would need to do if the repair does not resolve the issue.
7. Can I have the estimate in writing before I approve it?
A written estimate gives you something concrete to review and helps prevent misunderstandings about the authorized work.
